Geographic Location
Eastern Taiwan covers Hualien County and Taitung County and occupies about one-fifth of the total area of Taiwan, though it is home to only 3 percent of the population. This low population density has helped to minimize pollution and over development, making this is one of very few unspoiled places in Taiwan
The East Coast looks east to the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by the Costal Range to the west, creating the spectacular mountain and sea views for which this area is famed. Eastern Taiwan is also home to Green Island and Orchid Island, which though small in size, entice visiors with their fascinating landscapes and ocean beauty.
Eastern Taiwan is located at the conjunction of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Continental Plate, the collision of which gave birth to the Central Range, home of some of the world’s most breath taking canyons. Stretching over 200 kilometers, the eastern coastline north of the Liwu River is noted for its high sheer cliffs. Along the coast between the Hualien River and Beinan River, you can enjoy a varied landscape of beaches, pebble shores, reefs, offshore islets, and capes, as well as intriguing sea-eroded rock platforms, caves, and trenches.
